Transitional Kindergarten (Young 5s)

This program is the bridge between the freedom of preschool and the structure of elementary school for children who are not quite ready to make that leap. The group includes those who just miss the kindergarten cut-off date, and those who would benefit from another year before starting kindergarten.  It is a year to strengthen their foundations socially and academically.

With a group size of 12 children, our two teachers provide individualized attention. Lead Teacher, Pam, is a credentialed kindergarten teacher as well as a former elementary school principal and preschool director.

The program’s curriculum includes Zoo-phonics, an animal based phonics program, the Handwriting Without Tears program, and a Master Art program where children explore concepts through the work of great artists such as Georgia O’Keeffe, Claude Monet and Frank Lloyd Wright.  The children engage in a daily Spanish program of games, music and stories with a native Spanish-speaking teacher.

The class takes monthly field trips, including trips to the Hiller Aviation Museum, Hidden Villa, Shoup Park, Rodin Sculpture Gardens at Stanford University, the Palo Alto Junior Museum and Zoo, the Palo Alto Baylands and a variety of children’s plays at the Sunnyvale Children’s Theatre.  Children also enjoy two weekly park trips, plant and care for a garden, and have weekly cooking projects, in addition to long blocks of uninterrupted time for free exploration of activity areas both inside and outside.

This class meets Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. from late August through June.  Students may attend the afternoon program at the Hillview site if families need a full time program.  In July and August, students may attend all or any of our Summer Camp programs.
